ETEL ADNAN

Etel Adnan is a writer and artist whose renown as an Arab American poet is international. She was born in 1925 in Beirut, Lebanon where she was exposed to the French language and culture from an early age. After traveling to Paris at the age of twenty-three and completing a university degree in philosophy at the Sorbonne, she moved across the Atlantic and enrolled in graduate programs at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Harvard. She has held teaching positions in American universities, most notably at the Dominican College of San Rafael in California, where she taught philosophy from 1958 to 1972.

Écrivaine et artiste, Etel Adnan est connue mondialement en tant que poète arabo-américaine. Elle est née à Beyrouth au Liban en 1925 où elle a été exposée à la langue et à la culture françaises depuis son enfance. Après avoir déménagé à Paris à l’âge de vingt-quatre ans afin d’obtenir un diplôme universitaire en philosophie à la Sorbonne, elle a traversé l’Atlantique pour suivre des études de doctorat à l’Université de Californie à Berkeley et à Harvard. Elle a obtenu des postes d’enseignante dans plusieurs universités américaines, notamment à Dominican College à San Rafael en Californie où elle a été professeure de philosophie de 1958 à 1972.

In 1977, Etel Adnan published her best-known work: a French-language novel titled Sitt Marie Rose on the civil war in Lebanon. This book is now available in translation in nine languages and it is part of the curriculum of numerous university programs in the United States. While Adnan is the prolific author of a variety of other texts in French, she has also devoted herself to creative written work in English, ranging from epistolary publications like Of Cities and Women to reflections on the French capital city in Paris, When It’s Naked to collections of poems such as Master of the Eclipse. Not only has her work served as an inspiration for theatrical adaptations, but Adnan has also composed plays and has received recognition from Women Playwrights International for this important aspect of her creative activity.

En 1977, Etel Adnan a publié son ouvrage le plus célèbre : un roman de langue française intitulée Sitt Marie Rose sur la guerre civile au Liban. Ce livre est maintenant disponible en neuf langues et il fait partie du programme d’études de nombreuses universités aux Etats-Unis. Etel Adnan est l’auteur prolifique d’une diversité d’autres textes en français, mais elle se consacre également à l’écriture d’ouvrages en anglais de genres divers, y compris des publications épistolaires comme Of Cities and Women, des réflexions sur la ville capitale française dans Paris, When It’s Naked et des recueils de poésie tel Master of the Eclipse. Ses textes servent comme inspiration pour des adaptations théâtrales, mais elle est aussi dramaturge : ses pièces de théâtre lui ont valu la reconnaissance de Women Playwrights International pour cet aspect important de son travail.
