Nathacha Appanah is from the island of Mauritius where she began publishing literary essays before she moved to France in 1998 when she was in her mid-twenties. Appanah pursued academic studies in Grenoble and Lyon in journalism and the publishing industry before her award-winning first book went to print in 2003. Les Rochers de Poudre d’Or was a novel with a connection to the author’s own familial history: it portrayed politically engaged Indians who were brought to work in Mauritian plantations in the 19th century. Her second novel appeared in print just one year later, with a title that bears witness to the role of English in the writer’s native land. Blue Bay Palace is a work of fiction that grapples with contemporary class and caste differences in Mauritius as it focuses on the passion of a young Indian woman for a man who remains out of reach. Her third novel, La noce d’Anna, came out the following year. This work of fiction turns to contemporary France to tease out questions of exile and belonging in its depiction of a woman writer from Mauritius whose French daughter is about to get married. These first three novels were published in the “Continents noirs” collection of the Gallimard publishing house.

Nathacha Appanah vient de l’île Maurice où elle publiait déjà des essais littéraires avant de s’installer en France en 1998 lorsqu’elle avait une vingtaine d’années. Elle a fait des études de journalisme à Grenoble et à Lyon avant de publier son premier livre en 2003. Les Rochers de Poudre d’Or est un roman en lien avec l’histoire familiale de l’auteure : il dépeint les engagements politiques des Indiens qui ont été amenés à œuvrer dans la plantations mauriciennes au 19ème siècle. Son deuxième roman a paru seulement un an après, portant un titre qui témoigne du rôle de l’anglais dans la terre natale de l’écrivaine : Blue Bay Palace est un ouvrage de fiction qui fait face aux différences de classe et de caste à l’île Maurice en évoquant la passion qu’éprouve une jeune femme indienne pour un homme hors de sa portée. Son troisième roman, La noce d’Anna, a été publié l’année suivante. Cet ouvrage se tourne vers la France contemporaine pour traiter des questions d’exil et d’appartenance en peignant le portait d’une écrivaine mauricienne dont la fille française se marie dans la France profonde. Ces trois premiers romans ont été publiés dans la collection « Continents noirs » de la maison d’édition Gallimard.

Her fourth novel, Le dernier frère, published by Éditions de l’Olivier in 2007, received several literary prizes and considerable acclaim for its portrayal of a fraternal relationship between two boys of different origins who meet in Mauritius during the Second World War. In 2015, her fifth novel, En attendant demain, was published in the "Collection Blanche" at Gallimard.

Son quatrième roman, Le dernier frère, publié aux Éditions de l’Olivier en 2007, a reçu plusieurs prix littéraires et de nombreuses distinctions pour son récit d’une relation fraternelle entre deux garçons d’origines différentes, qui se lient d’amitié dans l’île Maurice, pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale. En 2015, son cinquième roman, En attendant demain, a été publié dans la « Collection blanche » chez Gallimard.
