YUMIKO SEKI

Yumiko Seki was born in Tokyo and has lived in Paris since she arrived in the city in 1982, when she was in her mid-twenties. She obtained a university degree in French literature in her native Japan before moving to France.

Yumiko Seki est née à Tokyo et a vécu à Paris depuis son arrivée dans la ville en 1982, alors qu’elle avait une vingtaine d’années. Elle avait déjà obtenu un diplôme universitaire en littérature française au Japon avant de déménager en France.

In Paris, she gained experience working for a Japanese television station where she has created several documentary films and served as a translator and television presenter. Her novel Chaud-froid, published in 2005, depicts the experience of a female protagonist growing up in Tokyo in the 1960s who is inspired from early on by music and ideas that come from the west. When this character named Yuka travels to Paris for a year of study abroad, she is seduced by the lifestyle and mindset of this new culture that she has long admired from afar. Even though it isn’t easy for an Asian foreigner to adapt to all aspects of Parisian life, Yuka realizes at the end of the academic year that she cannot return to her homeland, that she must take up permanent residence in the French capital city. This poignant, highly personal novel was the starting point for an interview that took place on the 20th of June 2005 in Yumiko Seki’s apartment in the heart of the 6th arrondissement of Paris.

À Paris, elle a travaillé pour une station de télévision japonaise où elle a créé des films documentaires et où elle a servi comme traductrice et présentatrice d’émissions. Son roman Chaud-froid, paru en 2005, dépeint l’expérience d’une fille qui grandit à Tokyo durant les années 1960 et qui est inspirée très tôt dans sa vie par des musiques et des idées occidentales. Lorsque ce personnage, nommé Yuka, a l’occasion de voyager à Paris pour une année d’études à l’étranger, elle est séduite par le mode de vie et l’état d’esprit de cette nouvelle culture qu’elle admirait déjà de loin. Même s’il n’est pas facile pour une étrangère asiatique de s’adapter à tous les aspects de la vie parisienne, Yuka se rend compte à la fin de l’année scolaire qu’elle ne peut pas retourner dans son pays natal, qu’elle doit s’installer de manière définitive dans la ville capitale française. Ce roman touchant et intime a été le point de départ d’un entretien qui a eu lieu le 20 juin 2005 dans l’appartement de Yumiko Seki, au cœur du 6ème arrondissement de Paris.
